Introduction:
At MTA (Manufacturing Technology Academy) a team of students took part in creating a robot to compete in the FIRST robotics competition. In summary, the goal of the competition was to project a two foot diameter ball through ground based and elevated score zones. I took part in the construction of this robot and helped with the maintenance during the competitions.
The Manufacturing Technology Skills and Objectives That I Used Were:
- Explain components of set up, machining, casting, molding, welding, and finishing
- Identify and use common hand tools
- Identify and properly use fasteners
- Estimate and measure the size of objects using SI and US units
- Measure with precision tools and instruments
- Identify the order and methodology of the assembly process
The English Skills and Objectives That I Used Were:
- Demonstrate flexibility in using independent and collaborative strategies for planning, drafting, revising, and editing complex texts.
- Know and use a variety of prewriting strategies to generate, focus, and organize ideas (e.g., free writing, clustering/mapping, talking with others, brainstorming, outlining, developing graphic organizers, taking notes, summarizing, paraphrasing).
- Analyze and evaluate the components of multiple organizational patterns (e.g., compare/contrast, cause/effect, problem/solution, fact/opinion, theory/evidence).
- Demonstrate understanding of written, spoken, or visual information by restating, paraphrasing, summarizing, critiquing, or composing a personal response; distinguish between a summary and a critique.
- Listen to and view speeches, presentations, and multimedia works to identify and respond thoughtfully to key ideas, significant details, logical organization, fact and opinion, and propaganda.
- Use sentence structures and vocabulary effectively within different modes (oral and written, formal and informal) and for various rhetorical purposes.
The Employability Skills and Objectives That I Used Were:
- Schedule time to meet task/project deadlines.
- Select appropriate human/material resources.
- Prioritize work.
- Identify and define problems/issues.
- Generate & select from alternative strategies to solve problems.
- Display punctuality and regular attendance.
- Complete tasks on time and meet deadlines.
- Take care of materials & equipment.
- Work without close supervision.
The pictures and video below show the robot that MTA’s FIRST team made. I constructed the prototype kicker (wooden leg) and helped dimension and place the bumpers and other components of the robot.

Justification:
I used this project for my portfolio to demonstrate my assembly and teamwork skills. I used technological skills to construct various parts of this robot as well as communicational skills to work in compliance with the rest of the team.
